{"id":38986,"date":"2020-06-30T11:04:45","date_gmt":"2020-06-30T10:04:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/horseandcountry.tv\/?p=38986"},"modified":"2020-06-30T11:04:45","modified_gmt":"2020-06-30T10:04:45","slug":"bhs-reveals-shocking-road-accidents-statistics","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/press.horseandcountry.tv\/en-us\/bhs-reveals-shocking-road-accidents-statistics\/","title":{"rendered":"BHS reveals shocking road accidents statistics"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Dead Slow: BHS Road Safety Campaign\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/x_0FO7eECQo?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Shocking new statistics from the British Horse Society (BHS) have revealed 36 riders were killed in road accidents during the past five years, while 181 horses have died.<\/p>\n<h2>Dead slow<\/h2>\n<p>More than 2,000 reports of road incidents involving horses have been reported to the BHS since it set up its <a href=\"http:\/\/www.horseaccidents.org.uk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">horse accidents website<\/a> in 2010.<\/p>\n<p>The charity has released these numbers as part of a new road safety campaign, which follows a recent, tragic accident where a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.horseandcountry.tv\/news\/2016\/03\/01\/horse-pulling-coffin-killed-road-accident\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">horse was hit and killed by a car as he pulled a funeral cortege<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The death of carriage horse Will prompted a number of petitions demanding greater protection for horses and riders. In response, the BHS has launched Dead Slow, calling for drivers to slow down to 15mph when they meet a horse on the road.<\/p>\n<h2>Legislation<\/h2>\n<p>\u201cA lot of people aren\u2019t sure how to safely pass a horse when driving, and so we have produced a video showing exactly how it should be done,\u201d said Lee Hackett, BHS director of policy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are campaigning for legislative change, but that can take a long time. That is why we are asking for this instant change in behaviour from drivers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Out of the 2,070 accidents reported to the BHS, 75% were caused by the vehicle not leaving enough room while passing the horse. Over 25% of respondents said that they also had to deal with driver road rage.<\/p>\n<p>The majority of incidents happen on minor roads and in rural areas, with 1,799 occurring in England, 146 in Wales, 115 in Scotland and 10 in Northern Ireland.<\/p>\n<h2>Near miss<\/h2>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s worth remembering that these statistics are just the accidents reported to us, there will be countless others,\u201d said Lee. \u201cAlmost everyone who rides horses can recount a story about a time they had a near miss on the roads.<\/p>\n<p>As part of the Dead Slow campaign the BHS has produced a video demonstrating how to safely pass a horse on the road and it is asking for equestrians to thank any drivers who pass them responsibly.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Shocking new statistics from the British Horse Society (BHS) have revealed 36 riders were killed in road accidents during the past five years, while 181 horses have died.
