Answer this questionnaire to find out"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>We put down lots of equine behavioural issues to being &#8216;naughty&#8217;, but your horse could be trying to tell you something.<\/p>\n<h2>Regular check-ups<\/h2>\n<p>According to horse whisperer Kelly Marks, pain is often at the root of behavioural problems. Think how grumpy and groggy you feel when you\u2019re not at your best. If a personal trainer showed up and told you to drop and give them 20, chances are you would \u2018nap\u2019 in response.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI like my horses to have a twice yearly physiotherapy check and treatment from an ACPAT (Association\u00a0of Chartered Physiotherapists in Animal\u00a0Therapy) qualified practitioner,\u201d says Kelly.<\/p>\n<p>There is a &#8216;gold standard&#8217; register of animal musculoskeletal therapists at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rampregister.org\/\">www.rampregister.org<\/a>.\u00a0Or you should ask your vet to recommend a practitioner.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf your horse starts to behave out of character a vet check is the place to start,\u201d Kelly adds.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"s1\">[bigbutton url=&#8221;https:\/\/horseandcountry.tv\/app\/details\/search\/Category18769\/3&#8243; text=&#8221;Watch Kelly Marks&#8217; advice here&#8221;]<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Brain, pain or training?<\/h2>\n<p>As well as getting your horse regularly checked, it is important you are aware of how he is feeling on a daily basis. The key is to this is knowing what &#8216;normal&#8217; behaviour looks like.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs an owner it can be difficult to determine the cause of bad behaviour,\u201d says Kelly. \u201cLast year I contributed to the book and DVD <em>Understanding Horse Performance: Brain, Pain or Training<\/em>, which explains how you can figure out for yourself whether it&#8217;s pain or behaviour, and where to go for help.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Is your horse in pain?<\/h2>\n<p>Physiotherapist Sue Palmer, who put the book together, compiled a comprehensive <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thehorsephysio.co.uk\/resources\/50questions.pdf\">questionnaire<\/a>\u00a0consisting of 50 questions, which will help you assess your horse. We have listed some of them below.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Is the issue worse at the beginning of the session, and improving towards the end?<\/li>\n<li>Does he kick or bite, or is he generally nervous around people or other horses?<\/li>\n<li>Is he ear-shy or head-shy?<\/li>\n<li>Does he need to be sedated to have his teeth checked?<\/li>\n<li>Is he difficult to catch, clip, or load?<\/li>\n<li>Does he pull a face, swish his tail, move away, or otherwise indicate displeasure in relation to bridling, saddling, girthing, rugging or mounting?<\/li>\n<li>Does he only lie down on one side, or is he unable to roll right over?<\/li>\n<li>Is he only ever ridden in an arena?<\/li>\n<li>Is he grumpy, aggressive, or otherwise generally miserable, at all or any specific times?<\/li>\n<li>Does he misbehave for the farrier or trimmer?<\/li>\n<li>Is he shod at intervals of greater than six weeks?<\/li>\n<li>Does he wear a particular type of noseband in order to stop him from opening his mouth.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>If you answered \u2018yes\u2019 to any of these questions, your horse\u2019s behaviour may be affected by pain.<\/p>\n<p><b>You can get more great advice from Kelly Marks on<\/b><b>\u00a0Horse &amp; Country.
