A 15-year-old has won Endurance GB’s Supreme Champion Trophy, riding an Irish Sport horse.
Unbeaten season
Hannah Maskell is the youngest person to take the trophy, which is awarded to the horse and rider gaining the most points during the Endurance GB season (March to October).
Hannah also won the 2014 Young Rider National title at Cirencester Park with Joyce’s Choice. Far from a typical endurance horse, ‘Jimmy’ is a 16hh Irish Sports horse.
This was the pair’s first season competing over distances of 80km or more. They won their first event at Brandon, Norfolk and remained unbeaten in 2014, taking four more titles.
The Buckinghamshire-based rider started endurance riding seven years ago with the Pony Club and joined Endurance GB in 2011.
No looking back
“Pony Club endurance is an ideal way to get into endurance if you have not done it before,” she said. “Once I tried endurance there was no looking back as it’s is a great sport where you can really get to know your horse better. I would encourage all young riders to give it a go.”
Hannah is now hoping to tackle the Red Dragon Festival of Endurance ride at the Royal Welsh Showground in Builth Wells.
