From Rescue Case to FEI Champion: the story of Theo & George

There aren’t many rescue ponies that make their way to the stardom of FEI competition, but here’s a story that proves with the right partnership, anything is possible.

Theo Charnley and George’s journey began when Theo was just 8 years old and George was a 3-year-old RSPCA rescue pony. Together they went on to enjoy an incredible dressage career, winning 26 championship titles and representing England as part of the winning Home Nations Squad in 2024.

As their partnership grew, their goal was simple: to challenge perceptions of rescue ponies and prove that hard work, determination and partnership matter most.

George gave a frightened eight-year-old boy the confidence to love horses, and when Theo outgrew him, he chose not to leave his best friend behind.

Such was their success, when Theo outgrew George, he fought off many offers to buy him and turned down many rides on larger ponies. Instead, Theo chose a different path. Inspired by watching the likes of Daniel Naprous, Boyd Exell and Dries Degrieck at the London International Horse Show, rather than ending their partnership, they started a new chapter together in carriage driving.

Since taking up the sport in 2025, Theo and George have won numerous national competitions, represented Great Britain internationally and secured victory at their first FEI International event.

In doing so, George became the first RSPCA pony registered with the FEI to win an international competition and together, Theo and George are the first partnership to represent their country in two equestrian disciplines: Dressage and Carriage Driving.

But perhaps their biggest achievement is the impact they have had beyond the competition arena.

George didn’t just change perceptions of rescue ponies. He changed Theo too. The confidence, trust and belief that George gave him inspired Theo to offer opportunities to two more RSPCA rescue ponies, Jerry and Elvis, who have already had huge success in Showing and Dressage.

Their story shows that success isn’t determined by where you start. It comes from trust, loyalty, determination and an unbreakable partnership.

If you believe rescue horses deserve recognition, and if you believe partnerships like this should be celebrated, please vote for Theo and RSPCA George in the Horse & Hound Unsung Partnership Award by clicking here.
