Welsh jockey Sean Bowen has added another major honour to his growing list of achievements, claiming a record sixth National Hunt Jockey of the Year award. With a second consecutive British champion jockey title behind him and his family also recognised at the Welsh Horse Racing Awards, the latest accolade celebrates both an outstanding individual career and a wider racing legacy.
Sean Bowen is a Welsh professional National Hunt jockey who has established himself as one of the leading riders in British jump racing. Known for his relentless work rate, strength in the saddle and determination in a finish, he has risen from a young jockey in a racing family to a two-time British Champion Jump Jockey. At 28, he is already building an impressive record. In the 2025–26 season, he retained his championship with 241 winners, the second-highest total achieved in a British jumps season, behind Sir Anthony “AP” McCoy’s record of 289.
Bowen takes substantially more rides than many of his rivals, and perhaps it is this work rate to which he owes much of his success. If you’ve ever wondered what goes into the making of a champion jockey, you’ll enjoy Horse & Country’s brand new series in partnership with Great British Racing, Jockey Fit. This seven-part exclusive series explores the gruelling fitness regime of a successful jockey, including their strength, cardio and recovery.
