Boyd Exell has made history, winning the FEI World Cup Driving Final for the sixth time.
‘Feel terrible’
Boyd’s performance in Bordeaux, France saw him beat the previous record holder Michael Freund (GER) who achieved five World Cup titles.
Defending champion Exell produced two great clear rounds, piling the pressure on his biggest rival IJsbrand Chardon, who was last to go with three seconds in hand.
IJsbrand was clearly determined to take the title, which he hasn’t won since 2006, and set off at a flying pace. However, he lost some control which saw his right leader jump over the start/finish and knock a gate. The Dutch driver then went through the wrong gate and had to retire, which put him in third place behind Germany’s Christoph Sandmann.
“I was very fast and I believe I was even five seconds ahead of Exell when fate struck again,” said IJsbrand. “I feel terrible that this has happened, I really wanted to win. But this is the game and I accept it.”
‘Winning wheel’
Boyd’s winning team comprised a mix of experience, with his horses ranging in age from seven to 25.
“Once we got in our zone, it felt like the old winning wheel again,” said the Australian, who is based inthe Netherlands.
“Poker, who is only seven, was a true member of our team today but the highlight for me really was the retirement of Junior. I am so thrilled for him and so happy he finished his career with a win.”
