Six Pony Club members have passed their A test, which is the highest level of exam for those nearing the end of their time with the club.
Tough task
Fourteen members took the test at Talland School of Equitation in Gloucestershireand Brampton Stables inNorthampton. The 42% pass rate is a testament to how tough the exam is, which is on a level with the BHS stage 4 riding and horse care exam.
Test candidates have to ride a number of unknown horses on the flat, over show jumps and cross-country fences during the exam, as well as demonstrating a practical knowledge of lungeing.
Immensely proud
“I wanted to take my A test as I am in my final year of The Pony Club as an associate member, and having attained all my efficiency tests I was desperate to complete the set, especially as the ‘A’ is such a sought after test,” said Hayley Ward from the Puckeridge Hunt Western Branch.
“My ‘A’ test pass is something I will be immensely proud of for the rest of my life.”
The qualification opens many doors for progression in an equestrian career and is held by a number of top riders, such as Jeanette Brakewell, Mary King and Antoinette McKeowen.
Real focus
While the pass rate has risen this year, 2014 will see a revised approach to the test, as candidates failing one section of a module will have the chance to retake the whole module within a year.
“This will be a real benefit in ensuring our candidates are not demoralised by not being fully competent in their A test, and will help to give them a real focus on where they need to train to achieve fully the next time,” said William Blane, chairman of Pony Club training.
