Disabled drivers can now access the Marlborough Downs in Wiltshire thanks to anew, improved route.
Treasured time
The improvements to the 2.2km tracks means they can now accommodate carriages specifically adapted for wheelchair use. Members of the Kennet Valley Carriage Driving Group (KVCDG), which is part of the Riding for the Disabled Association (RDA), have already been enjoying the benefits.
“I simply treasure the time I spend with the driving group,” said Bryony Fuller. “It allows me to get out in the fresh air and experience the breath-taking Marlborough Downs while also meeting with like-minded people.”
‘Remarkable opportunity’
The track was opened by the formerhead of the British Army, General Sir Mike Jackson, who served with the army for over 45 years,
“I have witnessed the devastating effect a disability can have both physically and mentally,” he said. “This driving route provides a remarkable opportunity for anyone with a disability as they can access the Marlborough Downs and experience its stunning surroundings within the peace of a horse-drawn carriage. This can only be hugely beneficial and healthy for the body and mind.”
