A ‘tomboy’ terrier has been crowned Best in Show at Crufts.
First Westie
The world-famous dog show saw a West Highland White Terrier take the prestigious title for the first time in 26 years.
Ch Burneze Geordie Girl – aka Devon – is owned by Marie Burns from Bishop Auckland, County Durham.
“I can’t believe it, it was amazing,” said Marie. “She is a typical terrier, a bit of a tomboy, very independent and fun to be around. I’m so thankful to everyone who has helped us get there.
Magnificant seven
Over 22,000 dogs took part in the four-day dog show at Birmingham’s NEC, which is now its 125th year. These where whittled down to the very best seven, who qualified for yesterday’s final (13 March).
The other six finalists were, Jen the German Spitz Klein, Eric the Pekingese, Zony the Border Collie, James the Gordon Setter, Hazel the Whippet and Hector the Bouvier Des Flandres.
Reserve Best in Show went to Hazel, owned by Charlie Donaldson from Middlebie, Dumfrieshire.
Friends for Life
Earlier in the day, a Lurcher who predicts her owner’s post-traumatic stress attacks, was named winner of the Eukanuba Friends for Life award.
Rosie Reid, from Swindon, bought Boo in 2010 after suffering an ectopic pregnancy. She was left unable to have children, which brought on post-traumatic stress disorder. But with Boo’s help she is able to lead a normal life.
Caroline Kisko Kennel Club secretary said: “This year has been such a great show, with dogs and their handlers showing their fantastic relationship across a range of dog sports and competitions.”
