Equestrian heroes celebrated at BHS awards

The British Horse Society recognised outstanding equestrian achievements at its annual awards, which were hosted by H&C’s very own Jenny Rudall.

About the awards

The event was held on Friday 27 Novemberat Saddlers Hall, London. As well as host Jenny Rudall, actor Martin Clunes – the President of the BHS – was in attendance to give out the awards to the worthy winners.

The British Horse Society Annual Awards bring together a group of people who are all dedicated and passionate about equestrianism, and have given years of their time to improve the lives of the people and horses around them.

Among the recipients this year were people who have gone above and beyond to help horses in need, those that have spent hours teaching young people equestrian skills, and others who have dedicated land for bridleways.

A few of the awards are highlighted below.

Fellows of the BHS

A special presentation during the ceremony welcomed two new members to The British Horse Society Fellowship. Becoming a Fellow is considered one of the highest accolades that can be earned in the equestrian world.

The first recipient was Danny Anholt, a champion for the BHS Approvals and Education system, and Director of Equestrian Sports at Millfield School in Somerset. The second fellowship went to top event rider Nick Gaunlett, who is a top eventer and has achieved great success in both in his own competitive career and in coaching others.

Elywn Hartley-Edwards Award

The former Editor ofHorse & Hound, Lucy Higginson, was awarded the Elywn Hartley-Edwards Award, which is given to a writer, broadcaster or publication whose work has been particularly beneficial to the wellbeing of the horse.

Lucy became the first female editor of the magazine in 2002. Speaking on the day of the awards she said: “It’s lovely to be recognised when good work is done by teams of people. I accept this with thanks on behalf of the many great people I have worked with over the years.”

President’s Award

The President’s Award went to Joanna MacInnes, for her work for the BHS North England committee. She said: “It feels totally mind blowing. I can’t believe it’s not somebody more deserving of it than I.

“I have always believed in the whole ethos of the BHS. Everything I believe the BHS does for safety, getting horses of the roads through access or welfare are all things that are really good and essential for horses.”

Tarquin Award

RAF Shawbury were presented with the Tarquin Award, for making a significant contribution to equestrian safety.

Squadron Leader Kim Leach was thrilled: “I just want to say a big thank you to the riding community in Shropshire who have really got behind us. This is just the start of a big campaign that will last for several years, hopefully we will carry on building those relationships and everyone will benefit.”
