The popular SEIB Racehorse to Riding Horse of the Year kicked off the final day at the Horse of the Year Show (HOYS) in the main arena (12 October).
Stuff of dreams
Faye Hesketh and her stunning dapple grey Flaygray were announced as the winners, with Claire Oliver and Chouxdamour the reserve champions.
“It means a lot to win at HOYS when you work week in, week out,” said Faye. “Ever since I was a little girl I’ve dreamed of a day like today, but you never think it’s going to happen.
Natural winner
Flaygray was trained by Chris Grant during his racing career, which saw him run 12 times and achieve three wins – twice over hurdles and once in a national hunt bumper. He then had 12 months off, before starting his career as a show horse.
Prior to his win at HOYS, the gelding was Supreme Champion at the Area NPS as a show hack, and won the Racehorse to Riding Horse at Aintree, Windsor and the North of England Show, where they also qualified for Hickstead.
Funny feeling
“He’s just so workable,” said Fay. “He’s a really good boy and never puts foot wrong, and tries 110 percent whatever you ask of him.”
Fay bought the 10-year-old grey gelding at the beginning of the year, after a recommendation from her partner.
“The instant I walked in stable I just melted,” said the Preston-based rider. “I got a feeling in my tummy, and just knew he was the right horse for us.”
