A lady rider will take part in the fiercely contested Arundel Castle Jousting Tournament in West Sussex, for the first time ever.
Fight for victory
The Jousting Tournament is part of Arundel Castle’s Jousting and Medieval Tournament Week.
Now in its ninth year, the competition takes place in late July and, for the first time, will feature a female participant. Marie Baron will represent the Kingdom of France, alongside her partner, Luc Petillot.
The Kingdom of Poland make a keen return, hoping to secure a win after coming a mere point behind the Kingdom of England last year. The contest has attracted new blood, with the Kingdom of Norway making their debut. With two of the best jousters competing for their Kingdom, Norway are hoping beginner’s luck will see them reign supreme.
Reigning champions
The most anticipated rivalry however is that of reigning champion, the Kingdom of England, with the Kingdom of France. The latter have been consistently denied victory against six time champions, the Kingdom of England.
“The atmosphere of our Jousting and Medieval Tournament Week is simply electric, I can’t think of any way to better describe the passion, excitement and skills that is palpable throughout the event,” said Arundel Castle manager, Bryan McDonald.
The six action packed days will be overseen by Kyle Van Dolah-Evans, who acts as the first Lady Marshall in Arundel’s history, supervising as head judge and supreme voice of authority on the field.
One of the largest inhabited and complete castles in England today, Arundel Castle overlooks the River Arun in West Sussex. Founded at the end of the 11th Century, it is currently the family home of the 18th Duke of Norfolk.
The castle plays host to the medieval week from the 26th to the 31st July. For the first time, visitors can book online in advance.
