A piebald has been abandoned in a field, tethered with chains and infested with maggots
‘So much pain’
The RSPCA was alerted to the pony by amember of the publicwho called the charity’s cruelty line.
Inspector Marie Hammerton arrived at the field in Grays, Essex last Thursday (12 November) where she discovered the mare had a large wound on her neck, where the tether had been digging in.
“The tether used was totally inappropriate – a thick metal chain wrapped in what appears to be the inner tube of a push bike,” said Marie.
“This has left her with a wound that is approximately five inches by two inches and swarming in maggots, and it’s estimated by vets that this has been festering for around two weeks. She must have been in so much pain.”
‘Love and attention’
The 12.2hh pony is estimated to be around four years old. She has not been microchipped and it is believed she had been abandoned for some time.
‘Madge’ is receiving care for her wounds at a local vets and is expected to make a full recovery.
“She is a very sweet pony who just wants love and attention,” said Marie.
