The ‘most emaciated horse ever seen’ by the Horse Trust has been deemed well enough to be been turned out with a herd.
Sole survivor
As reported in H&C, Polly was the sole survivor of three emaciated horses abandoned in a field in Buckinghamshire. With a body score of less than 0.5, it was feared the mare wouldn’t pull through, and it has been a long road to recovery.
Whenever Polly put weigh on, she lost it again and she had problems with her temperature, pulse and respiration. Polly was also suffering from rain scald and dermatitis.
However, six months after being rescued by the Horse Trust, she is now well enough to be turned out with a herd.
New life
“It seems such a long time since Polly came to us in February,” said Jeanette Allen, chief executive of the Horse Trust. “Hers was a case of cruelty of the worst kind. Her condition was so terrible that we could never be totally sure if she would pull through until recently.
“Every day Polly enjoys from now is a bonus. It won’t be the end of treatment for her, but it is the beginning of her new life.”
