Preventing Pulling Injuries with the Idolo Tether Tie

Tying up a horse may seem like a simple daily task, but when done incorrectly, it can lead to serious injury. Pulling back while tied is one of the most common causes of avoidable accidents, and the resulting injuries can be both physical and psychological.

The most common injuries from pulling include trauma to the poll and neck, particularly affecting the Axis and Atlas vertebrae. Wither and shoulder muscle strain is also frequently seen, as the horse’s body absorbs sudden force. Back and sacroiliac strain can occur when the horse braces or slips during a panic pull. Legs and tendons are at risk if a horse scrambles or slips while tied. Severe pulling can also cause mouth and facial trauma if pressure is transmitted through the headcollar. Beyond the physical, horses can develop lasting psychological trauma, associating tying up with fear and confinement.

Prevention is far better than cure, which is where the Idolo Tether Tie offers a safer alternative to traditional tying methods. Designed by respected horseman Roy French, the Tether Tie was inspired by his work with formerly untouchable stallion Hermoso N, who went on to become the 2015 Hartpury Champion. The Tether Tie uses pressure and release to gently teach horses to move back without panic, reducing the risk of injury and building trust.

For safer tying, always secure your horse at wither height or above, and ensure it is attached to a solid tie ring or something similar. Equipment should always be checked before use. Headcollars should fit correctly, clips should be in good condition and ropes should be long enough to allow controlled movement without slack that could cause entanglement. Old, frayed or weakened equipment should be replaced immediately.

Unlike baler twine, which has inconsistent breaking points and can either snap too easily or hold firm and contribute to injury, the Idolo Tether Tie offers a controlled release. This allows the rope to slide under pressure rather than trapping the horse and escalating panic. It also removes the unpredictability of frayed twine and the risk of entanglement from loose fibres.

The Idolo Tether Tie introduces a calm and consistent tying routine, helping horses understand that they can step back without force or fear. This simple change in your daily routine can make a significant difference to your horse’s comfort, confidence and long-term soundness.

Choosing the right tying system is a small step that makes a big impact on horse welfare.
