Racing Clydesdales are to return to Exeter racecourse as part of its Devon Day fixture (Sunday 22 November).
Wonderful spectacle
The race, which sees professional jockeys climb on board these gentle giants, first started in 2013. It has become a highlight on Exeter’s calendar, attracting hundreds of new racing fans – including actor Martin Clunes, who owns two Clydesdales himself.
“Clydesdales racing at Exeter down the home straight make a wonderful spectacle and one that draws in crowds from far and wide,” said Martin, who lives on a farm in nearby Dorset. “It shows off these wonderful animals versatility and we are delighted to show our support.”
The horses are once again provided by Tim Ancrum and Aileen Warefrom Adventure Clydesdales, which offers riding holidays across Dartmoor.
Thrilling racing
Tom Parker is the winner of both races at Exeter in 2013 and 2014, and the eight-year-old gelding will be back to defend his title.
“We’ll be racing them over two furlongs again, and hope they will provide a thrill for racegoers,” said Tim.“They won’t do what a racehorse will do, but then a racehorse won’t do what a Clydesdale can do.
“I would say that they will do 20-25 mph when they are really going. It’s like a Range Rover sport, compared to a Ferrari.”
The event kicks off the day’s racing at 12.20pm. As well as having a bet on the race, there is the chance to ‘buy’ a Clydesdale for the day and experience racehorse ownership. All money raised will go to the Devon Air Ambulance Trust (DAAT).
‘Safe hands’
Local former jockey-turned-showjumper Hadden Frost was air lifted off the course in February this year when he suffered a nasty fall.
“I can’t thank the Devon Air Ambulance enough,” said Hadden. “It would scare me if I totted up how much I owe them. You don’t have to go very far to find someone who has needed them, and even if you are a happy hacker you never know when you might need them. When they arrive you feel you are in safe hands. They’re just brilliant.
