Here at H&C we like to think we’ve seen it all when it comes to horses – aside from teddy bears taking to the saddle.
Riding Teddy
When rescue pony Bertie was ready to be ridden, the only jockey small enough for the pint-sized pony was a large, pink teddy bear.
“To get him ready for his career as a riding or driving pony, Bertie has been long-reined and happily wears a bridle with a snaffle bit and he is also used to wearing a saddle,” said Totem Horses rehoming volunteer, Holly Higginbotham.
“But since he is only 11hh and we don’t have a small rider, Bertie has only been ridden by ‘Riding Teddy’ who is a decent weight and wobbles a lot, but causes the pony no concern.”
Due to be shot
Bertie was one of several colts due to be shot by a breeder who didn’t want to pay to have them gelded and couldn’t find anyone prepared to take on a stallion.
Totem Horses in Powys, Wales stepped in to help, and saved the yearling’s life. When he first arrived, Bertie was very nervous around people, however with consistent handling he has built up his confidence and is now ready to go to a new home.
“Bertie is a very sweet natured little pony who is good and quiet to handle and is eager to please and very honest, especially for his age,” said Holly. “Once he knows you he is good to catch and he will happily stand and be groomed by an adult or child.”
Permanent home
Now aged three, Bertie is ready for the next stage of his education. He needs to go anexperienced owner who is used to backing young horses – and has someone suitable to ride him.
“Everyone at Totem loves Bertie to bits and wants to find him a permanent, loving home – perhaps where he can be brought on as a driving pony too – so he has a job to do when he’s outgrown,” said Holly.
