A shock decision in the Ladies Side Saddle Championship at Horse of The Year Show (HOYS) has seen the winner stripped of her title after her horse misbehaved in the presentation.
‘Speechless’
Dolly Maud and Aunty Iris were crowned champions, following a foot-perfect performance. However, the 10-year-old was clearly spooked by the cheering crowd during the prize-giving.
The judge gave Aunty Iris several chances to compose herself, but when she continued to play-up, the horse and rider were asked to leave the ring.
Dolly, who is best friends with Zara Phillips and no stranger to being in the public eye, tweeted she was “speechless”.
“We won and then we lost. Strangest moment as the prize is taken out of your hand. Highs and lows. Manners maketh the horse.”
‘Mixed feelings’
The Great Scot! Ladies Side Saddle Championship title was given to the runners-up Jayne Ross and Hello Dolly instead.
Jayne admitted she had “mixed feelings” about her win, but agreed you have to have a “mannerly horse” when competing in such classes.
“It’s a very strange position to be in,” said Jayne. “I’m very sorry for them, as Dolly is a great mate, but thrilled for myself. The horse deserves it, as she’s been unbeaten all year.
Uproar
The decision has caused an uproar on Facebook, although many showing fans support the judge’s choice. According to one person the horse was “faffing around, spinning and jolting” and nearly knocked the judge over.
Jayne explained Aunty Iris’ behaviour had been fine until the last moment, which cost her the tile.
“This is such an artificial environment and such strange atmosphere for a horse, it is difficult sometimes to contain them,” she said.
“You come here knowing you could possibly blow it in the presentation. It fell in our favour today.”
