There is something undeniably special about a coloured horse. From the boldest piebald to the prettiest skewbald, their distinctive markings, character and presence have captured the hearts of horse lovers across Britain for generations.
Today, coloured horses and ponies are a much-loved part of the equestrian world, but this wasn’t always the case. When the Coloured Horse & Pony Society (CHAPS UK) was founded in 1983, coloured horses were not always given the recognition they deserved. A group of passionate owners and enthusiasts came together with a shared ambition: to celebrate coloured horses and give them the opportunities and recognition they deserved.
Over the years, CHAPS has played an important role in championing these beautiful and versatile horses and ponies. Its grading system was introduced in 1994, and the Society has since registered more than 20,000 horses and ponies.
At the heart of this success is the CHAPS Championship Show. What began as an opportunity to showcase coloured horses has grown into a highlight of the showing calendar, with competitors qualifying through affiliated shows across the country to compete for prestigious championship titles.
From traditional cobs and native ponies to riding horses and youngstock, the Championship celebrates the incredible variety of the coloured horse. More than their eye-catching coats, it is their versatility, individuality and wonderful characters that make them so cherished.
For more than 40 years, CHAPS has helped coloured horses take their rightful place in the spotlight – and their popularity shows no sign of fading.
